This week's "other dance" feature:

The Highball If you have not been to The Highball yet, you have one more month before it will be shut down as part of the transformation of the South Lamar shopping center into a combined residential/commercial development. Even if you are not "into" its 60's nightclub theme, the unique connection the Highball has with significant events makes it worthwhile to at least check it out once. The bowling lanes and dance floor at the Highball come from the "Rock and Bowl", and infamous New Orleans establishment that was destroyed by hurricane Katrina. The lanes will not be there when the new Highball is constructed next year in a new location adjecent to the south Lamar Alamo Drafthouse.

If you play folk dance music and are not on our list of Musicians/Musical groups, please send your information to newsletter_editor@aifd.cc

Jo Soto

Jo Soto

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of our beloved friend and fellow dancer, Jo Soto. A member of AIFD since the 1960's and current President of TIFD, Jo was a long-time leader and teacher in the folk dancing community. She passed away on Friday, October 12th, in Austin. Memorial services are pending.

A Memorial will be held for Jo at the First Unitarian Universalist Church, 4700 Grover Avenue, on Sunday, Oct. 28, 3 p.m. The service in the Sanctuary will be followed by a life celebration reception in Howson Hall. Anyone who would like to play some folk music in her honor is welcome to bring their instrument. Please contact Genevieve Kent (evikent@gmail.com / 512-919-2493) so that she can coordinate a loose set list that includes easy dances and some of Jo's favorites.
