Michel_BregerStephanie AndersonTeaching: After reviewing the Waltz, Stephanie Anderson and Michel Breger will teach the Polka, focusing on comfortable and enjoyable turning. The teaching will continue with an introduction to pivoting with a partner. Remember, no partner needed to attend this class.

Friday, February 2, 7-9:45 pm.
Teaching session is free.
Then admission fee is $5 for those 18 and older.

There is no fee for those under 18,
but they must be supervised by a designated person 18 or older.

AIFD is organized exclusively for educational purposes, including the promotion and teaching of traditional folk dance, music and crafts native to a variety of countries.

Couples Dance 101 Series

Feel comfortable and enjoy dancing with a partner!

Until February 23, our regular teaching will focus on dances for couples. Starting with couple-dance basics and continuing with dances such as the Waltz, Polka and Two-Steps. Special dance tips will be included to help you dance with confidence. Lessons are free. Singles and couples are welcome. No partner necessary. For more information email Michel Breger at Flyer.

AIO Friday, February 16: Valentine's Day Party.
Celebrate Valentine's Day with AIFD. Live music will be provided by AIO. More details forthcoming.

Joy Diamond
Joy DiamondOur dear friend and long time folk dancer, Joy Diamond, passed away on January 26 in Georgia after a long illness. Those who have been dancing for many years remember Joy's passion and enthusiasm for all sorts of dancing. Joy also served on the AIFD Board of Directors as late as 2013. Joy will be missed, but her dance spirit will live on. Obituary.

No partner necessary, we rotate often.
Austin Barn Dancers
Wednesdays, 7:30-10pm, Hancock Rec Center.
Enjoy this American dance form. All dances taught and called. Music provided by LOCO (Local On-Call Orchestra) - an open band, where anyone is welcome to come and play. Contact Dale Rempert at or visit for more information.

Sharon CasteelJoin our teaching director, Sharon Casteel, as she kicks off a 6 week Beginner Folk Dance class at the Dottie Jordan Recreation Center, 2803 Loyala Lane in Austin (map). This free class is the result of Dottie Jordan and other Austin Rec Centers showing an interest in AIFD activities at Hancock Rec Center. Flier.

Saturday, February 17: Slavic Marti Gras!!
Slavic Marti GrasEnjoy Maslenitsa .. the rich Slavic carnval traditions!!! Maslenitsa or Pancake week is a Slavic folk holiday which has its origins in both pagan and Christian traditions. Festival conceived at the initiative of the Russian-based Forum of Slavic Cultures. Numerous countries enjoy a pancake blowout on Fat Tuesday, but no culture fries up a storm quite like the Slavic, whose ‘butter week’ before Lent involves bumper quantities of bliny. March 9-14: Pre SAFDF events!!
San Antonio Folk Dance FestivalThe week prior to the San Antonio Folk Dance Festival will be filled with a variety of fun and interesting workshops and events. These include a Set For Spring English Country Dance workshop, a Canary Island Dance Workshop - Celebrating the 300th anniversary of the arrival of Canary Islanders to San Antonio; a Fun Arts Day; and a Hawaiian luau. San Antonio Folk Dance Festival Registration is now open for 60th annual San Antonio Folk Dance Festival! Featured teachers include: Jaap Leegwater (Bulgarian), Sonia Dion and Cristian Florescu (Romanian), and Campbell Miller (Social and American Vintage).
